Transit Gallery

Michael Allgoewer is a Montreal born artist who is living and working in Hamilton, Ontario. His work consists mainly of assemblage-based components, which form larger installations. These pieces usually reference the historical and mythical past to elucidate universal, metaphysical themes. He has shown recently at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, The McMaster Museum of Art, Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant, Burlington Art Centre and the Grimsby Public Art Gallery. An outdoor installation was exhibited at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in 2001.

"Allgoewer has long had a fascination with allegory. Like his predecessor Joseph Beuys, he marries everyday objects to archetype in a compelling manner."

Laura Arseneau, Globe and Mail, 1999

" On their own, Allgoewer’s materials are ordinary, everyday objects. Taken together, they are transformed into something of metaphorical import, by way of the language of the subconscious-symbols that transcend words, culture and the various other barriers that impede comprehension."

Jacqueline Lealess, Hamilton Magazine

"In Heartwood, Michael Allgoewer drops the cool pretences of twentieth-century sculpture. He has taken a long walk through this millennium’s forest of signs and has gathered some choice fruit, that we can all share in our own way."
